Douglas-Home, Alec 1903 - 1995. Conservative politician. Alexander Frederick - Baron Home of the Hirsel He was foreign secretary 1960-63, and succeeded Harold Macmillan as prime minister 1963. He renounced his peerage (as 14th Earl of Home) and re-entered the Commons after successfully contesting a by-election, but failed to win the 1964 general election, and resigned as party leader 1965. Knighted 1962. He was again foreign secretary 1970-74, when he received a life peerage. The playwright William Douglas-Home was his brother.
